Navigation Skills
Know how to find your way without GPS. Learn map reading, compass use, and natural navigation methods that work when technology fails.
Compass Fundamentals
Understanding Your Compass
- 1The red needle always points to magnetic north
- 2Orienting arrow should align with the needle
- 3Bezel can be rotated to set bearings
- 4Direction of travel arrow shows your path
Taking a Bearing
- 1Point direction arrow at your destination
- 2Rotate bezel until orienting arrow aligns with red needle
- 3Read the bearing from the index line
- 4Walk in the direction of travel arrow direction
Natural Navigation Methods
Sun Navigation
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. At noon in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun is due south.
Star Navigation
The North Star (Polaris) indicates true north. Find it using the Big Dipper's pointer stars.
Shadow Stick Method
Mark shadow tip, wait 15 minutes, mark again. Line between marks runs east-west.
Moss and Trees
Moss often grows on the north side of trees (less reliable in dense forests).
Essential Map Reading Skills
Understand topographic contour lines
Learn map scale and distance calculation
Identify terrain features
Orient map to compass
Triangulate your position
Plan routes using terrain association
Always Know Your Location
Practice navigation regularly. Before any trip, study your route, identify landmarks, and always carry a physical map and compass as backup to electronic devices.
